5/15 – Sterling, VA at Mid-Atlantic Jam
The second day of the tour took us to Sterling, VA. This was the location of Mid-Atlantic Music Jam which was the reason for the timing and the direction of the tour. We saw some beautiful countryside during the drive. I think we went through Pennsylvania, then West Virginia, then Pennsylvania again before making it to Virginia. A fuel stop led us to a band photo shoot and we were able to take in a couple songs by a regional high school band playing in the park.
We made it in after dinner, which was quite late considering the jam started around 10am that morning. But, we were welcomed with many open arms connecting with our booking agent, Jenna Dirval, West Coast friends, Gmetal and Leni, along with hug after hug after hug of friends we haven’t seen since the last jam, which was in Minneapolis last October.
It’s a family reunion of sorts…one where most family members are talented musicians and all you want to do is play music for three days. We were thrilled to finally be there and we anxiously made our way to the jam room after checking in to the hotel.
There was a three-song rotation going on and we threw our name up on the board to get a slot. We were so late we were almost the last to play before the “acoustic” jam with no PA would begin. We had a ball and we love playing for a room full of folks that are sincerely paying attention and focused on the music. What happened next was magical. Our good buddy, Voodoo Shilton, was up next so he made his way to the stage. However, the audience was demanding more songs. We felt odd…it was a 3-song rotation after all. Voodoo, the gracious guy that he is, motioned for us to play more songs and began to exit the stage. However, I grabbed him and asked him to sit down and jam with us. We had a blast! The best way to describe it was through the words of another jam attender, “There is always one moment of every jam that is “the moment”. That was it.”
