[Behind The Album] Song Two: With Every Breath Of Air

[Behind The Album] Song Two: With Every Breath Of Air

by Mat on February 28, 2015

Initially called “Pontoon” during the early band rehearsals due to the way it was originally written, “With Every Breath Of Air” is a song that came about rather quickly from a musical stand point. But, lyrically it took several months to be developed. Here is what Troy had to say about the songwriting process.

“The chords and basic framework for the song came about on a pontoon [boat] drive around Holiday Acres lake, north of Moberly. The pace is slow at the lake, so the cruise was long. Banging away at the acoustic for the duration of the ride, I remember recording a quick instrumental version as we were just heading back to dock. It would remain in that form until some time later.

One evening the band decided to switch gears from our rehearsing to work on something new. Pontoon came to mind. We weren’t entirely sure what to do, and if I recall correctly, Mat patiently waited while Amy and I discussed how to approach the tune, in less than theoretical words. “If you walk this way while I walk that way, and we cross over here, then we can circle around there, we can meet at the junction”. That is what a session might sound like if one were listening in.

The band version took off relatively quickly, with most of the vocal melodies on the first demo. The only problem was that there were no lyrics. It was a form of scat singing that we sometimes do in order to see where the song is leading us. Needless to say, there was work to be done. The lyrics wouldn’t come easily, and even the finalized version retains the stream of conscious sound and feel of the original.

I imagine Amy will always call it Pontoon.”

Lyrics for With Every Breath Of Air

Yeah it’s alright friend
The house here where hearts they grow
We’re carried down to a summer stream,

heal me there!
Wonderful, here I will stay until it’s over,

in the winter
It won’t bring us down now

With every breath of air, to laugh and love and come to find

I, I’ve only come to untie,

the knots in your rope trip you over

Take it to the stairs, in the arms of a song. Heartbreak overflow
The light is so perfect, oh I know I cannot stay. Take me back

Feet don’t fail me now.

Trust is walking through the dark
Oh hear me now, whose higher

A sacred prayer, a kiss for the lonely born.

Oh, a treasure you are
Hear this on your tongue

before words spoke inside you
No, it won’t be long

You’re waiting for
You’re lonely for
