INSIDER
WHERE IN THE WORLD
April 20th 2007 : LIVE at The Brick in Moberly,
Missouri
3 blocks away from the our rehearsal space and local headquarters, we find
ourselves in a small upstairs venue called The Brick.
The people make you feel at home. We had been planning
the show for over a month in hopes of bringing out the masses. Amy was most
optimistic, hoping for a homecoming of sorts and a great evening of music.
She called on various establishments and local businesses to help promote
the show. Most of her work went unanswered or greeted with kind declines,
or no response at all. She didn't let that stop her, making her own giant
flyers with lamenation for local fans who wanted to place them in their yards.
She tried another approach, offering a personal invitation to those within
the workplace. One would think that a place of business that earns thousands
of dollars a year from you might be willing to consider placing one flyer
up in their breakroom. Not the front window, just the break room. Nada.
Ok, ok. Negativity aside, it was a joy to
play. Numerous times Mat commented earlier in the day as we set up, "Guys,
I'm looking forward to rockin' with you tonight." Poor lad was under the
weather, yet still gleaming to pick up the sticks and pound the skins. I
too was looking forward to the show for many reasons. It's amazing how you
can draw on different sources to strengthen yourself, allowing the appreciation
to set in for all that has been given.
Loading the van usually takes us about a half hour, if we are using our own
sound system. Around 3pm we fill the cases, lock the latches, roll out the
gear and puzzle piece it into the van. We meet my father at the venue, along
with Mr. Billy 'Tomahawk' Thomason, who helps
us carry the gear up the 23 stairs. When it's heavy, you know every step.
Soundcheck goes quickly and well, 15 minutes, in comparison to the 2 hours
it takes to set the stage. If there ever was a band killer, driving and loading
probably rank up rather high on the list. I'm glad we haven't yet succumbed
so such a fate. It is rewarding when that one person comes up to you after
a show and says the one thing you need to hear. You bank on it. It's in the
soul, so you just pray it doesn't get torn apart in the process. There is
almost always something good to savor in every moment of life.
