TOUR
INSIDER
WHERE IN THE WORLD
Moments before the show is to start, I arrive and quickly perch up on the
stage with my guitar. I can't imagine the worry it must cause my bandmates.
"Hey, have you seen Troy yet?" 3 blocks
from the gig is quite the luxury. Having Mat squeeze behind the 'box
of emotion', as one puts it, was
an interesting thing to witness. After some time we are ready to go.
Cranking up with a slightly different improvisational intro to 'Back',
Amy and I kick in without drums. Just as we enter the melody line, Mat cruises
through a seamless drumfill to complete the groove awaiting him. Completely unplanned,
it worked in a surprising way. As the show progresses,
the crowd warms up and greets us well. I find it fascinating how the energy you
give out can return back to you through the audience. We begin to see hands clapping,
and hear hoots and applause from voices that seem strangely familiar.
After our first set, Hog Leg makes their way to
the stage. Billy gets placed in the 'box', much to his disliking. With only the
3 original Hogboys, they fit rather snuggly on the conservative stage. John fires
up the raw acoustic tones that are trademark to their sound, while Taylor 'Tar'
lays down some basslines on his SG style bass guitar. They sound great. No one
knew the band would actually play more than a handful of songs. I wonder if Hog
Leg knew they were going to play more than a handful, themselves. The alternative
country folk rock blues they wield... how it brought back the memories. No one
does it quite like Hog Leg.
We take the stage after a brief timeout to talk with some fans, friends and family.
It's good to see the faces, talk amongst those who have walked this musically
journey with us over the years. We appreciate our fans more than they likely
know. It's difficult to express to those around you how you feel without coming
across falsely. I think that is another reason the music is so special to us
as a band, because it is the way in which we say 'thank you'.
An encore brings us back out for another song, even though the crowd is thinning.
We pull out 'Move My Soul' and it feels good to finish on a high. We talk a bit
more with fans we haven't seen in quite a while, catching up on the times. The
loadout goes extremely well, with a few extra hands and without gravities pull,
going down the steps was incredibly nice! Home by 2am. So, 11 hours later, we
call it a show.
Thanks to all those who came to the gig at The Brick. We would like to see the
event grow, so please take some time to encourage your friends to come to the
next show. We can all continue to build something great in music and friendship.
